Van Yüzüncü Yıl University was established with the Decree Law No. 41 dated 20 July 1982. However, the attempt to establish a university in the eastern regions of Turkey began a long time ago. The idea of establishing a university in Van is very old and dates back to before the Republic. Ottoman Sultan Il. It is understood from the instruction given by Abdulhamit on October 3, 1905 that the deputy of Van Nakibüleşraf, Taha Efendi, was given permission to construct a madrasa and a lodge on the empty land in Van known as the Old Hospital. In addition, the construction costs of the darülfün (university) requested to be opened in Van were met from the Treasury of Evkaf-ı Hümayun and the letter sent from the Vizierate to the Ministry of Evkaf-ı Hümayun and the Ministry of Internal Affairs on July 3, 1913, and its establishment in Van. It is understood that a special importance is attached to the desired University. The President of the period, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, sent the Minister of National Education, Mustafa Necati Bey, to Van in 1927 to make investigations; Mustafa Necati Bey found it necessary to establish a university in Van. In 1928, teacher Ferit Nur (Quran) was sent to Van and was asked to transform the existing secondary school into a high school and form the core of the university that was planned to be established. Atatürk in the opening speech of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on November 1, 1937, ' For the Eastern region, activities should be started now to create a modern culture city with a primary school and finally a university in the most beautiful part of the Van Lake Coasts. ' He said, for this purpose, he sent the then Minister of National Education Saffet Arıkan to Van for land determination. At the beginning of November 1938, in the opening speech of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Atatürk stated that 'the development of Istanbul University, the completion of Ankara University and the establishment of Şark University in the vicinity of Lake Van is continuing rapidly and with great importance. On June 11, 1951, by the Ministry of National Education, among them Prof. Dr. A delegation of 15 people was formed, where Afet İnan was present, and substantial investigations were made to determine the location of the Eastern University. This delegation aims to establish an Eastern University whose center will be Van; He found it appropriate to open some faculties and institutes in Elazığ, Erzurum and Diyarbakır as auxiliary branches to Eastern University. Meanwhile, the number of universities in Ankara and Istanbul has been increased; New universities or faculties, colleges and academies that will form the core of these universities were opened in İzmir, Erzurum, Trabzon, Elazig, Diyarbakır, Sivas, Samsun, Malatya, Kayseri, Eskişehir, Bursa and Edirne. However, during these periods, Van could not be among these happy provinces. In 1968, the Association for Establishing and Maintaining Van Universities and Vocational Schools was established, and this association endeavored to open a faculty affiliated to Erzurum Atatürk University in Van and later transform it into a separate university. For this purpose, a delegation formed in 1981 went to Ankara, and the members of the association accepted by the President, Mr. Kenan EVREN, were given the good news that a university would be established in Van. Approximately 8.5 months after the enactment of the Higher Education Law No.2547, which brought a new order to our universities on November 6, 1981, a decree law was issued on July 20, 1982 regarding the Organization of Higher Education Institutions numbered 41. With this decree, new universities were opened. Among them was Van Yüzüncü Yıl University. Various local initiatives were undertaken to establish a university in Van.
